Internship Write Up

For my internship, I worked for a Safety Lens Manufacturing place named Defensor Company.  My first task at Defensor was entering the information listed on the orders into the computer.  I input the customer's name, Rx prescription for their lenses, lens material and frame selection.  The Rx prescription contains information from the Dr’s eye exam which is written up as a plus or minus number. Next, I would take the paperwork to the warehouse and match it up with the correct safety frame and side shields.  If a frame or side shield wasn't available, I would make a list of what was needed and give it to the supervisor to order.

I would also help in the Optician in the laboratory by loading lenses in the machine.  The machine would cut the lenses to the exact prescription listed on the paperwork. This process starts by first warming up the machine that I have to use, then I grab the tray with the Rx prescription, frame and lenses. I put the frames on this special machine that traces the frame from inside where the lenses sit. So now on the Rx I will write down the number it gives me for the size of the lens.  After that I use those numbers on a different machine that cuts the lenses so it can fit in the frame. The numbers I input in the machine are important because it determines the size for the lenses. After that’s done I test fit the lenses in the frame for a perfect fit. I mount the lenses in the frame and then send it to quality control for inspection. After inspection I take the tray with the frame and new cut lenses back to the office and tell them this order is done.

Another task was logging Invoice payments into the computer.  At times, I would have 20 to 50 lens invoices that needed to be entered in the computer.  This task is very important because it is used for billing purposes. The information also helps keep the customers records in order so we know the amount, when we got the order and when it was shipped out.  This task keeps me busy to the point before you know it, I'm done. I take a break and eat my lunch. When I come back I check in with my supervisor to see if Im needed anywhere else. If I’m all done with the computer entries I usually restack the trays in the warehouse and put any loose frames back in stock. I would also check the trash cans and break down boxes.

So what I learned in my internship was that a lot of things are not easy to do at first.  I thought it would be easy to just to put numbers in the machine so it can cut the lenses, however, if your off by one number you’ll just mess up the entire order.  When this happens you have to restart and recut new lenses. My main obstacle was trying not to mess up on orders by inputting the numbers incorrectly. With my internship, it was really fun to me because after a while you will start getting familiar with what to do and then gets easier.

7/3/17

  • When I got to my internship first thing I had to do was to put the Rx in the computer so we know what we had received from other companies like frames from the customer or even lenses I was a hard time trying to keep track of all the name I went through because Sometimes we have double orders.

7/6/17

  • This time I’m starting to get the hang of this Rx information stuff with putting in the computer it’s starting to get easier but finished early so now I start doing a new thing with putting out the orders.

7/8/17

  • This time it was not Rx entering some now I’m putting out orders and picking out the frames from the customer of what they ordered.

7/13/17

  • I have a new task now it started cutting the lenses with help from my stepdad.

7/17/17

  • Now I’m cutting lenses but it’s a little hard because the machine we use can’t have any wrong numbers so I have to be careful with putting in numbers for the Rx.

7/19/17

  • It’s not that is any more just have to remember the number it tells you and make sure you write on the Rx paper.

7/22/17

  • Now I’m getting used to using this machine it’s really cool how one of the machines traces the frame so it can cut the right size lens.

7/25/17

  • I’m mostly entering today so no work for lenses only entering Rx and moving trays out the offices.

7/28/17

  • I’m back cutting lenses again but not a lot of work to cut I have a little work to do with pulling out frames.

8/5/17

  • I didn’t have a lot of cutting job work but I did have some entering to do and pulling out the frame I can say entering Rx on the computer is very painful because I'm always typing
